Dreaming of zooming off on your hot wheels…and your destination includes a rocky Ghat? Think again. Your car is sure to undergo maximum strain while climbing a Ghat, so run a speedy check on your car’s fitness condition. Most breakdowns happen while driving uphill, taking hairpin turns, or on steep hilly terrain.
Here are a few tips:
- Run a thorough general check on your car in an authorized service centre well in advance.
- Pay special attention to brakes, clutch and accelerator efficiency as they are more prone to heavy tension.
- Inflate the stephney/spare tyre to suitable pressure levels as it comes handy in the rugged landscape.
- Simple and crucial, fill your car’s fuel tank before setting off.
- Use fog lamps even at daytime to help visibility.
- Your car tools-set should have open-end spanners, reversible screwdriver, a pair of pliers, torch.
- Be prepared with prescribed medicines in case of nausea symptoms at high altitudes.
- Pre plan the route you wish to take (eg. Use a state or highway map of India) prior to starting off on your tour.
- Always avoid night journey on Ghat roads (especially when it is two way).
- And on the safer note, apply for a car insurance policy to claim your losses due to landslide, earthquake, storm and flood.
Some famous and dangerous ghats in India – Rohtang Pass, Baralacha Pass, Taglang La Pass and Lachlung La Pass in Himachal, Khyber Pass, Khardung La Pass and Karakoram Pass in J&K.
Traveling through mountain Ghats is both a challenging and rewarding experience. Getting organized and following few simple but crucial steps would help you save undue frustration on your journey.

1.On ghat priority must be for UP driving vehicles since reverse down is not manageable.
2.Do not apply clutch at all both ways.
3.Better be on the Second gear while up driving.
4. All bends-taking the left side of the road is a
must.

Subramanya,
On a ghat road, always yield way to the vehicle that is going downhill. Reasons being, that vehicle will have larger momentum and sometimes, it would be difficult to stop instantly. And the vehicle going uphill will usually be running at lesser speed and can be stopped with more ease.
I need one info. While driving in ghat section, at the hairpin curve, to whom we have to give priority. It is to moving up or coming down?
Maybe the top page that I read in my life?!?
Great read! I want you to follow up on this topic!?!
I’m thrilled you wrote that!?!
What a great resource!
Nice comments Anupama Rae, but the topic is about ‘before you plan to drive’, not while you are driving. Isn’t there a difference?
No one seems to know in India that right of way belongs to the person climbing up – he is not supposed to stop and give way to the one climbing down…Please all of you listen very carefully – The one climbing down has to stop or slow down and give way to the person climbing up. and please stop before hand not at the curves….Twice two stupid men who did not know the rules started arguing after almost killing me!
Please ensure that your hand brake must be in perfect working condition. Please learn when and how to use the hand brake to prevent roll-back of your car on hilly slopes.
Please learn about light signals. Please never use right blinking indicator to tell the car behind you to over-take. This is a horrible and dangerous practice in India. Use left indicator to tell the driver behind you that he/she can overtake.
When in doubt, never overtake. When you don’t have clear vision of the other lane (for instance at curves), never overtake. Don’t overtake 3-4 vehicles at a time. Over-taking is not a matter of right.
In hills, the gear that use to go up must be used to come down. This is a safe practice. Never, never switch off your car engine while coming down. It is a very dangerous practice. Car engine is the best and fool-proof brake. If you switch off the engine and the gear is not in neutral, your car will immediate stop. Please do not go by the absurdities shown in Indian cinemas.
